Medical update from rounds today
I made it to rounds this morning, at the cost of letting Amy stay home and sleep a little more, which was a good thing anyway. Teddy's doing pretty well, according to the doctors. They put him on a pretty small dose of Lasix (furosimide for those curious about the non-brand name). It's a diuretic, but it's also something to help with high blood pressure. In his case, it is meant to help him to breathe a little easier by relieving fluid on his lungs. It's not a bad sign or anything. It's actually expected, so it's a good sign that he didn't need it for so long. He also had a feeding tube (specifically, a NG or nasogastric tube) put in. He's been eating well, but he sometimes falls asleep while eating, so they wanted it in in to make sure that he got food into his stomach. Of course, that only lasted until he figured out that he had fingers, that they could work their way inside the loop of the tube where it wasn't taped, and that they could then pull it out. However, he's been eating pretty much everything given to him, so it hasn't been used for much except to give him the Lasix.
Other than that, a quiet day here at Children's, with me holding him for about 5 hours this morning, and Amy holding him for several hours tonight. Of course, after he has his surgery and his heart is working properly, I suspect that he won't be such a little angel, sleeping the day and night away. But then again, as Terry Pratchett once wrote, human beings are where the falling angel meets the rising ape. I just hope his rising ape isn't a howler monkey.
PS: Looking at the blog stats, I see that the "Baby pictures" post is currently the most viewed post here. So I've added a label for Baby Pictures, so you all can filter for what you're really here for, and skip all the wordy, wordy, wordy bits for the cute pictures of the little guy.
